# Android Preferences, Permissions, and Troubleshooting This section goes over tips, tricks, information, and troubleshooting strategies for your AnimalTrakker®-enabled Android device. ## Android Permissions This section of the troubleshooting guide details how to set tablet permissions for Android 10, 11, and 12. %%Talk to #oogie about what permissions each version of Android needs, including 13 and 14. Possibly have #rose test both old and new Android versions for compatibility.%% ### Android 10 Permissions 1. Start by opening **Settings** > **Apps and Notifications** > **Advanced** > **Special App Access** > **Unrestricted Data**. 2. Toggle the slider so AnimalTrakker® is set to On. 3. Go back twice. 4. Navigate to **Permission Manager** > **Storage**. 5. You'll find AnimalTrakker® under **Denied**. Change it to **Allow**. 6. Close Settings. 7. Restart AnimalTrakker® on your tablet. ### Android 11 Permissions 1. Start by opening **Android Settings** > **Apps and Notifications** > **Advanced** > **Special App Access** > **Unrestricted Data**. 2. Toggle the slider so AnimalTrakker® is set to On. 3. Go back twice. 4. Navigate to **Permission Manager** > **Files and Media** > **AnimalTrakker®**. 5. Toggle the button for **Allow management of all files** and allow access. 6. Close Settings. 7. Restart AnimalTrakker® on your tablet. ### Android 12 Permissions 1. Start by enabling Bluetooth Access. Navigate to **Settings** > **Privacy** > **Permissions Manager** > **Nearby Devices** 2. Find the **Not Allowed** section and find AnimalTrakker® on the list. Click Allow. Next, we need to allow Unrestricted Data and File Management. Note that these are the steps for Android 11, as we've not yet tested them on Android 12. 1. Start by opening **Android Settings** > **Apps and Notifications** > **Advanced** > **Special App Access** > **Unrestricted Data**. 2. Toggle the slider so AnimalTrakker® is set to On. 3. Go back twice. 4. Navigate to **Permission Manager** > **Files and Media** > **AnimalTrakker®**. 5. Toggle the button for **Allow management of all files** and allow access. 6. Close Settings. 7. Restart AnimalTrakker® on your tablet. ### Allow Unknown Applications Allowing unknown applications is required before installing and using AnimalTrakker®. 1. Start by opening **Android Settings**. 2. Go to **Apps**. 3. Click **Special App Access**. 4. Click **Install Unknown Apps**. 5. Toggle **Allowed** for **Drive**, **Files by Google**, and **Gmail**. 6. Close **Android Settings**. ## Android Preferences This section outlines a few Android preferences we've found to be helpful when using AnimalTrakker®. ## Screen Brightness It may be easier to use your tablet or device on maximum brightness in bright sunlight. You may find your device's **Adaptive Brightness** setting useful if it has one, but if not, consider setting your brightness to maximum as your battery allows. ## Screen Timeout We've found that the screen timeout function works best for us when set to 30 minutes. This means the screen won't completely drain the battery if you change tasks, but it'll stay on as you work on your flock, even if you take small breaks. ## Android Troubleshooting This section goes through troubleshooting tips and tricks for your Android tablet.
